A call to ban the construction of minarets in Switzerland has raised heated debate ahead of a nationwide vote next month. The proposal, backed by the rightwing Swiss People's Party, is also opposed by all the other main parties.
Please note that the Swiss People's Party is not just a fringe group: in 2007, when it started this anti-minaret campaign, it held the most seats in the Swiss parliament and was a member of the coalition government. It has since amassed 113,000 signatures of support for its "anti-Islamification" campaign.
Check out the campaign's poster, which has already been sharply criticized by Amnesty International:
Is it just me, or do those minarets look alarmingly like missiles?
Sometimes I really miss Canada.
