(Amster)Dam great weekend

What a fabulous weekend! Amsterdam has everything we like: bikes, beer, and bizarre waterways! To prove it, we have a whole bunch of lovely photos for you (as always, click to embiggen).

There are about half a million bicycles in the city of Amsterdam, and we considered joining the ranks of the two-wheeled (10Euro for 24hours), but the chilly temperatures and the easy walkability of the canals kept us on two feet. Still, we took the opportunity to investigate some cycling innovations...

Bringing cargo-biking to a whole new level, may we present the Dutch wonderbike, the ClubSportive:
Kids = cargo (we also saw babies in car seats toted around in this manner):

For the specialty cyclist, your trusty steed, as it were:
For the more motor-inclined, a Moto Guzzi. Who would ride in the side car, Swiss Mister or Swiss Miss? The debate rages on.
Taking Mrs. Whisky's advice from Friday's comments, we went to check out the Heineken brewery tour. First thing we learned was that the brewery is no longer operational, more museumional, but we still felt like we got our money's worth.
Especially when we went into this bizarre chill-out lounge. It comes after your first taste of beer, but before reach the end-of-tour bar. What does it mean???

Bottled by yours truly -- Swiss Mister and Miss IS premium quality, just as the bottle advertises.
We also went to the Van Gogh Museum, which was fantastic, and Anne Frank House, which was very moving (and surprising -- the secret annex is much bigger than I had imagined). We did a little shopping (new shoes for Swiss Mister, a second-hand oxblood leather jacket for Swiss Miss), had a lovely anniversary dinner at Puri Mas, and of course took in the mayhem of the Red Light District. Apparently, if you are British and getting married, your bachelor party MUST take place in Amsterdam, and you must wear a superman/bunny/baby costume.

Until our next adventure...

  1. So glad you both enjoyed Amsterdam!! It is one of my favourite (and somehow romantic, despite the Red Light ladies/bachelors) destinations, and the Van Gogh museum is truly fantastic - agreed!

Can't wait to see you both in April! Until then I continue to live vicariously through you while studying for my exam.

  2. We absolutely loved the city! So much so that we've added it to our "List of Cities to Consider" for next moves.

The only thing that gave us pause: we saw not one but TWO different convertible drivers putting their car-tops down...in the 2-degree weather! Perhaps this is an indication that all the sunshine we experienced is definitely not normal? ;)

Keep on trucking, Dr. K! That exam is no match for you!
