When the going gets tough, the tough get theme songs

Things have been tough lately, but luckily I've got back-up. Swiss Mister and I have set some new goals and reaffirmed our commitment to our crazy life together, and now it's time to pick up the proverbial pieces, get motivated, and get going!

Swiss Mister and Miss Motivation Strategy #1: get a theme song.
(Hey, it's worked for us for the last few years!)

We present an audio/visual sampling of our psyches, 2008-2010...

2008: "This Year" by The Mountain Goats
Ian would listen to this song on his way to IMD, trying to overcome his exhaustion, loneliness, and uncertainty. I would listen to it on the way to UofT, reminding myself that there was light at the end of the writing tunnel, and that Ian and I were going to make it through the year, even it if killed us. (Spoiler alert: we survived.)

2009: "End of the Line" by The Traveling Willburys
Moving to Switzerville was a fairly traumatic experience, and one that left Swiss Miss in tears for the better part of March/April of this year. Swiss Mister and Miss' friends made a bon voyage scrapbook for them, full of pictures of good times, and they included the lyrics to this song. The take-home message: "It's alllllllll right." Notice how the Traveling Willburys repeat it about a million times? Very effective! (Click link for video.)

2010: "You are the Best Thing" by Ray Lamontagne
The reason we do what we do, and why we keep working hard.

Note to Matt: your regularly scheduled programming of naked Germans will be back soon.

  1. Love is all that really matters.

A most excellent personal anthem of love and inspiration. I am in tears. I get that way with good love songs.

    Keep feeling it.

    Love for both of you.

  2. "It's all right...."
    Another superb anthem.
I am dancing and crying around in my office.
With themes like these, you are on the right track.
No doubt. And the difficult times will provide rich soil for the future.

Just had to add this. Came with the singing along and dancing. Ger and I have a selection of between he and I tunes over the years too.

    big hugs

  3. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who dances around her office (or has theme songs)! :)

Sometimes we just get so bogged down in the day-to-day, and we need to be reminded why we're here, and why we're together. The theme song really works.

    Love back.

  4. Wow, this blog has gotten a lot more emotional lately. It's really touching, but wow, what's next?

I'm so glad that my repeated playing of the Travelling Wilbury's record slowly permeated our friends to the point that it became a theme song and part of your scrapbook!

    Handle With Care,

    Matt

  5. Didn't you see my special note to you, Matt? I know it's in tiny type at the bottom of the post, but it's there!

  7. End of the Line" is the last track from Traveling Wilburys' first album, released in 1988. In March of 1989, we traveled back from a ski trip to Mt. Tremblant on a 7 hr. journey with a car full of kids and the Wilburys on CD. Do you remember that Swiss Mr.?

  8. I definitely remember that album... but I don't think it was a CD player... 1989 sounds a lot like cassette tape to me.

  9. Hey, Noon. Borrow away. Very effective. I thought the video would also appeal to you. ;)

Glad to see you lurking (and delurking) here on the blog.
