Geneva!

Saturday saw an early start (6:15 out the door!) to get us to Geneva for breakfast. Why? To rendezvous with Swiss Mister's best man Aaron, in town for a World Economic Forum meeting.
First thing was first -- some pain au chocolat, coffee, and the morning news. Note the rather colourful story advertised in the top right.

Then it was off for some Geneva exploring... Geneva did not seem to be the most happening of towns, but we still managed to stumble across Tavel House, one of Switzerland’s remarkable examples of civilian medieval architecture. We also found a park with oversized chess boards (and vin chaud and hot chocolat!). Swiss Mister: 2, Aaron: 0.
As we toured about the city in the day, we saw a disturbing number of riot police, squad cars, and water cannons. We asked a few people what was up, but nobody seemed to be in the know... Later we found out we had somehow missed this:
Protests against the annual WEF meeting in Davos took a decidedly violent turn -- burning cars, smashed shop windows. All very un-Swiss. We seem to have the knack for missing mega-demonstrations in the cities we visit. In Madrid, for example, we somehow only caught the tiniest edge of a 2 million-person pro-Life protest!

So, where were we while Geneva was burning? Oh, at this bizarre mannequin-heavy DNA exhibit:
On the way home, a Berlin-born architect tried to pick up Swiss Mister (no dice, lady!), and we made it back to the Banana-ranch at about 1pm, where we were pleased to find our little fur-guy recovering nicely from his recent eye infection.

All in all, a lovely day with a lovely friend...who rescheduled his flight just to hang out with us for the day. Thanks, Aaron! See you at Christmas!

  1. Hey Swiss Friends!

I temporarily fell behind in my viewing of your blog, but I'm back and so happy to read of your adventures in your very baffling country. Genitals on newspaper covers, but also referendums to institutionalize racism against Islam? Wow. All that and chocolate, too. Looking forward to seeing you guys!
