The plot, she thickens: I have discovered that the cyber backstabbing featured on yesterday's blog was motivated by Rogue Friend's bitterness over his unrequited love for me. (The fact that Swiss Mister was the author of the Wikipedia article was a contributing factor, as you might imagine.) Also, Rogue Friend actually went to the trouble of creating a Wikipedia profile for the sole -- or at least immediate -- purpose of flagging my page for deletion.
As Swiss Mister has suggested, I am filing this incident in Annals of the Pathetic -- and blocking Rogue Friend from my email. Swiss Mister also (jokingly) suggested that I create a Wikipedia page for Rogue Friend, cataloguing his douche-baggery and lame-o characteristics...but that would be a little over the top. Amazingly funny, but definitely over the top.
I've posted before about the dangers of life on the internet, but this is the first time I have been the recipient of web-related...what do you call it? Aggression? Swiss Mister says, "Rogue Friend crashed your internet car," which, I think, is a rather fair way of describing it.
The concept of Frenemies is explored in detail in this This American Life episode. Enjoy, and be kind to your friends.

How did you figure out that this was his/her motivation?
ReplyDeleteThere was a series of emails exchanged, emails in which Rogue Friend talked about his "years of speculation" concerning our possible romantic future together, and the fact that he was "annoyed" that Ian had written the page, a move RF found "arrogant and tactless."
ReplyDeleteRF stressed, however, that these factors weren't a part of his page-flagging calculus. Oh, no -- his love of WIKIPEDIA (not me) was his guiding principle.
I basically told him to fuck off and get a life.
Why is it that when some people want to show affection, they do so by ruining things? I'm sure this has been frustrating, but it'll make for good fun when discussing his douche-baggery in the future! Things always end up so absurd!
ReplyDeleteIt's so true, Sina. What was RF thinking, exactly? That I'd find him ever-so-much more attractive now? That this move would somehow pay me back for all those years I wasn't in love with him? That reasonable people really are THAT passionate about Wikipedia?
ReplyDeleteSwiss Mister and I have had some good laughs about it. And "Annals of Pathetic" is right next to "Fodder for Future Writings," so you never know...
Can RF read this blog? Can we spill hot coffee on his douchey crotch?
ReplyDeleteNo, he can't read this blog. I never gave him the address (a friendship indicator, in itself?), and this blog is not searchable via Google.
ReplyDeleteYes about the coffee-spilling, though. Especially in the crotch region.
Well, have you seen the discussion on Wikipedia about him? A decent amount of people calling to have him banned.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, Jon??? Do you have a link you can send me? I can't seem to find the goods...
ReplyDeleteMwahahaha.
