Papiersaal!

Swiss Miss' alter ego didn't lie -- melancholic indie-pop it was!!!

Three for one
Singer/songwriter David Bazan, former singer of Pedro The Lion, tours Europe with his first release, Curse Your Branches. Even if you don't know his name, you might have heard some of his tunes through Bon Iver or Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes. Bazan stops by Papiersaal this Friday and will be joined by Wintersleep frontman Paul Murphy's Postdata, and Julian Amacker from Zurich, who presents his first album. Melancholic indie-pop to really get into your winter blues.
Friday 8.30 pm, Papiersaal

We took in the show with Max and Alesha. We spent a lot of money on whisky sours, and a lot of time pondering lyrics like the following:
"...beady-eyed, flesh-eating bats..." (Max heard "flesh-eating beds")
"...lay you down, lay you down, lay you down [x 1million fricking times]..."
"...the vultures are coming, but I will shield your eyes..."
"...when the paramedics found me in my own blood..."

And so forth.

There were Canadians in the mix -- the rugged plaid ensemble + Jesus haircut of the keyboardist gave it away. We were impressed by an instrument Swiss Miss referred to as the Shisha Piano, but which we subsequently learned is called a melodica.
Papiersaal is a great little venue, made only slightly weird by the fact that it's basically in a giant shopping mall complex, Sihlcity. Even so, it'd been a long time since we saw some live music, and not even the driving rain could dampen our spirits. (Awwwww.)

  1. David Bazan is great. I still listen to Pedro The Lion's "Control" on a weekly basis. I'd call it "biting" as opposed to "melancholic". Haven't managed to get into Curse Your Branches, though...

  2. He was super weird in person. Nice, but weird.

There were lots of songs about him being "three days sober". Definitely melancholic, especially when we were ordering drinks that the bartender refused to make, given that he had to shake them and it was crazy quiet in the bar.

I will check out this Pedro... I could use some bite.
