Are you still in the game if you don't know you're playing?

I was trolling around Internet, trying to keep up with the literary comings and goings of the homeland, when I happened upon this nugget:

2010 Finalists, Western Magazine Awards
Fiction
SPONSORED BY CANADA WIDE MEDIA LIMITED

Andrew MacDonald, Eat Fist!, Event
Ben Lof,
When in the Field with Her at His Back, The Malahat Review
Bill Gaston,
Petterick, The Malahat Review
Stephen Gauer,
Hold Me Now, Prairie Fire
***Swiss Miss***,
The Dead Dad Game, Prism International

What now? The same story that already has the 2009 PRISM International Short Fiction Prize under its belt, along with a nomination for the 2010 Journey Prize, is now a finalist for the Western Magazine Awards? Um, thanks! And what are the Western Magazine Awards, again? I didn't know, so I had to Google them.

I've put calls into the WMA and PRISM (who must have nominated me?) to say thanks and, by the way, what?, and I hope to have more information soon.

If I win, they will (hopefully?) let me know in October, and give me $750.

If only all my stories were such silent stalwarts.

  1. Like a silent army, the game relentlessly moves forward in roll and form; Even while we slumber or are otherwise distracted.

The Dead Dad game continues to play.
    Heart felt congratulations. RB

  2. Thanks, RR! You (especially) will be happy to know that no dads were harmed in the writing of this story.

Now I'm just waiting for the movie deal...

  5. Thanks, Brenda! And yes, I did see the posting on the PRISM website -- at least someone's aware of what's going on!
